These days you have to know how to get backlinks that get the click, because it’s not just about getting links.
A link from a website where nobody ever clicks to your site is worth much less in the eyes of the search engines, than a backlink that actually has people clicking on the link and going on to explore your website in depth!
This is simple really. Provide value!
So look for avenues where you can do this. How can you ensure that people click on your links? By targeting your ideal customers.
In short, it's useless getting backlinks on sites that have nothing to do with what you're selling. This will only alert Google that you're either a spammer or that you're trying to game the system.
And hello? The people who visit those sites couldn't care less about what you're offering. So stop wasting your time and look for sites that YOUR target audience visits.
FORUMS
One of my all time favorite ways to get really good backlinks, is to participate in forums.
Forums are online communities of people who are interested or passionate about a particular topic.
So your job is to find forums that revolve around your niche and start participating, answering questions, giving your opinion, etc.
The secret here is not to spam people by linking to your website in every post. That will not work. Remember people are not stupid and they will see right through your behavior.
Start giving out free relevant advice on the forum and then, when a specific question comes up that you think you can seamlessly provide a link to your website without appearing spammy, go for it!
Another trick is to look for forums that allow a signature. What this means is that with every post, a link to your website appears at the bottom of your post. Some forums do not allow this. Others will give you permission to put a signature after you’ve made a certain amount of posts. Always look for their rules and guidelines so that you have a clear idea of what you can and can’t do.
Forums are a fantastic way to build backlinks but also to increase traffic to your website!
I have a forum that I comment and participate in, which brings me traffic from posts I’ve made two years ago! If you provide value, they WILL come to your website! Always remember that.
Does all this sound too time consuming for you? Well that's because it is!
But here's the deal.
Taking the “shortcut” in link building simply doesn't work anymore. Now more than ever. In fact, it might even backfire on you! It must all seem natural and organic. This is why it’s never a good idea to buy link building packages that promise you hundreds and thousands of backlinks in a few days.
Look at it from Google’s perspective. Google crawls your website regularly. Let's say it usually finds a few backlinks per month. What happens if all of a sudden Google finds a thousand backlinks that were all created in one week? What are the chances that Google will think that those links are genuine? NIL!
Will forums work for each niche? I doubt it. But if you find a forum that is not a breeding camp for spammers, where people are all the time asking questions about problems they're having and a forum that is very active (i.e. you see hundreds of questions being posted everyday with a good number of replies and participation) then you have found yourself a goldmine.
YAHOO ANSWERS ET AL
Another way of getting backlinks that get clicked on, is to become a member of Yahoo Answers (and similar sites) and start answering questions. Again be very careful not to spam these sites because it’s very easy to get banned.
Give relevant answers that help people solve their problems and you’d be amazed at the number of people who will be more than willing to check out your website!
So next time you’re pondering how to get backlinks, ask yourself this first “Where can I share my expertise and alleviate people’s problems?” Your first intent should be to help people, not solely to get backlinks!
And diversify your links. It's the only way to survive in a Post Penguin world!
